dance lab:the

Sunday Best is a safe and inclusive space to dance freestyle and move at your own pace. All welcome, there are no steps to be learnt. You just need a body and a willingness to move it. Your body is your compass.

What can you expect?
I will be offering a broad choice of music in the shape of a wave. It is up to you how to surf it. The class will begin with slow quite music giving you time to arrive, warm up, stretch and familiarise with the space and with the people around you. The tunes comes from a range of styles: latin jazz, funk, world music, soul, techno, rap, dub, etc. I always create a couple of pieces: eithe a remix or a sound collage. Their aim is to interrupt the flow for a couple of minutes and introduce an element of awkwardness: What? What is happening? How do I dance to this? Examples from previous sessions: a weather report; a remix with Hanna the plumber victory speech. You wonder why, and I do too, and probably I could talk about it for a long time.

Who am I?
I am a writer, performer and musician. I spent the first half of my life, reading books, writing books, publishing books, teaching books, until I realised that I was with the wrong tribe; my real tribe was the movement people tribe. Then I started to dance and to attend workshops and have one to one sessions in a range of disciplines: somatic dance, butoh dance, total theatre, improvisation, Alexander Technique, voice improvisation, clown, dark clown, mime, etc. My aim has always been to increase the range of my body expressivity that I have used since then for: acting in theatre and video, live art, body movement, vocal improvisation, experimental music, performance poetry, and in the last 10 years playing with the band chopchop.

Is that it? Organized by dance lab: THE, fancy name… do you have a plan?
Glad you ask! Well! Maybe not that glad. Hum! You know when there is something simmering in your mind, but you don’t know what it is yet. Maybe giving it a name makes it more real, maybe you can help to discover what it is? Some things are bouncing inside my skull, to this date only under my beret, and now under yours too: 1. Creating special events with a theme? 2. Run workshops to spark creativity emerging from body movement, helping people that feel stagnated and need a bit of a shake to be energized. My interest is in finding new angles, sending you on tangents, unblocking obstacles, generating ideas, opening creative spaces, etc. I have been asked to do this in the past and this has been very successful. 3. Invite people from diverse dance disciplines to run a class: contact improvisation, somatic dance, etc. But for the time being, let’s just dance in Sunday Best.
